What TARGIN is and what it is used for
TARGIN is prescribed for the treatment of severe pain that can only be adequately controlled with opioid analgesics. Naloxone hydrochloride was added to counteract constipation.
How TARGIN works
TARGIN contains oxycodone hydrochloride and naloxone hydrochloride as active substances. The analgesic effect of TARGIN is due to oxycodone hydrochloride, which is a powerful analgesic (painkiller) from the group of opiates. The second active substance in TARGIN, naloxone hydrochloride, is used to counteract constipation. Impaired intestinal function (eg constipation) is a characteristic side effect of treatment with opiate analgesics.
TARGIN is a prolonged-release tablet, which means that the active substances are released over a longer period. Their action lasts 12 hours.
How to take TARGIN
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
In the absence of another prescription from your doctor, the usual dose is:
Adults
The usual starting dose is 10 mg oxycodone hydrochloride / 5 mg naloxone hydrochloride, taken as prolonged-release tablet (s) every 12 hours.
Your doctor will decide how much TARGIN you need to take each day and how to divide the total daily dose into morning and evening doses. He / she will also determine any necessary dose changes during treatment. Your dose will be determined depending on the severity of the pain and the individual sensitivity. You will be prescribed the lowest dose needed to relieve the pain. If you have already been treated with opiates, TARGIN treatment may be started at higher doses.
The maximum daily dose is 80 mg oxycodone hydrochloride and 40 mg naloxone hydrochloride. If you need higher doses, your doctor may prescribe additional oxycodone hydrochloride without naloxone hydrochloride. However, the maximum daily dose of oxycodone hydrochloride should not exceed 400 mg. The additional self-addition of oxycodone hydrochloride may affect the beneficial effect of naloxone hydrochloride on intestinal function in the absence of naloxone hydrochloride.
Deterioration of intestinal function may be expected when switching from TARGIN to another narcotic analgesic.
If you feel pain between two doses of TARGIN, you may need a fast-acting analgesic. TARGIN is not indicated for such cases. In this case, consult your doctor.
Please tell your doctor if you think the effect of TARGIN is too weak or too strong.
