Synjardy 5 mg/1 000 mg 60 film tablets in pack (empagliflozin/metformin hydrochloride)

What Synjardy is and what it is used for
Synjardy is a diabetes medicine that contains two active substances called empagliflozin and metformin.
• Empagliflozin works by blocking a protein in the kidneys called sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2). SGLT2 prevents the loss of glucose (blood sugar) in the urine by reabsorbing glucose into the circulation during the filtration of the blood through the kidneys. By blocking this protein, the drug causes blood sugar, sodium (salt) and water to be excreted in the urine. Thus, the blood sugar levels, which are highly elevated due to your type 2 diabetes, are lowered. This drug may also help prevent heart disease.
• Metformin works in a different way to lower blood sugar levels in the blood, mainly by blocking the production of glucose in the liver.

Synjardy is added to diet and exercise for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adult patients (18 years of age and older) whose diabetes cannot be controlled with the addition of metformin alone or metformin and other diabetes medications.

Synjardy can also be combined with other medicines to treat diabetes. These can be medicines that are taken by mouth or injected, such as insulin.

In addition, Synjardy can be used as an alternative to taking empagliflozin and metformin as separate tablets. To avoid an overdose, do not continue to take empagliflozin and metformin tablets separately if you are taking this medicine.
It is important to continue with your diet and exercise as your doctor, pharmacist or nurse has told you.

What is Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus?
Type 2 diabetes is a disease that is linked to your genes and your lifestyle. If you have type 2 diabetes, your pancreas does not produce enough insulin to control the level of glucose in your blood and your body cannot use its own insulin effectively. This leads to high levels of glucose in your blood, which can lead to health problems such as heart disease, kidney disease, blindness, and poor circulation in the extremities.
