What DURACEF is and what it is used for
DURACEF 500 mg capsules contain as drug substance 500 mg of cefadroxil as cefadroxil monohydrate.
DURACEF (cefadroxil) is a semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic for oral use. Duracec is used to treat the following infections caused by cefadroxil-sensitive microorganisms:
• urinary tract infections,
• infections of the skin and soft tissues,
• respiratory tract infections (pharyngitis and tonsillitis),
Adults and children weighing more than 40 kg: Infections of the urinary tract
The usual dose for uncomplicated lower urinary tract infection (eg, cystitis) is 1 to 2 g per day as a single dose or divided into 2 doses.
For all other urinary tract infections, the usual dose is 2 g divided into 2 doses.
Doses for skin infections are usually 1 g once a day or divided into 2 doses.
Pharyngitis and tonsillitis (throat infections) caused by group A beta-haemolactic streptococci
For the treatment of beta-hemolytic streptococci group A in tonsillitis and pharyngitis, 1 g once a day or divided into 2 doses is recommended.
Infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract
For mild infections, the daily dose is usually 1 g, divided into 2 doses (500 mg twice a day). In moderate and severe infections, a dose of 1 g to 2 g per day is recommended – 2 times a day (500 mg to 1 g every 12 hours).
