What is Nexium and what it is used for

Nexium contains a substance called esomeprazole, which belongs to a group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors. These drugs work by reducing the amount of acid that is produced by the stomach.

Nexium is used to treat the following conditions:

Adults
• “Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease” (GERD). This is when acid from the stomach returns to the esophagus (the tube that connects your throat and stomach), causing pain, inflammation and heartburn.
• Ulcers of the stomach or upper gut that are infected with a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori. If you have this condition, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection in order for the ulcer to heal.
• Stomach ulcers in adults caused by medicines called NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Nexium can also prevent the formation of stomach ulcers if you are taking NSAIDs.
• An excessive amount of acid in the stomach caused by a pancreas formation (Zöllinger-Ellison syndrome).
• Continued treatment, after therapy to prevent re-bleeding from intravenous Nexium ulcers.

Adolescents aged 12 and over
