1. WHAT CREON IS AND WHAT IT IS USED
• Creon contains a mixture of enzymes called “pancreatin”.
• Pancreatin helps digest food. The enzymes are from the pancreatic glands of the pigs.
• Creon contains small pellets that slowly release pancreatin into the intestines (gastro-resistant pellets called microspheres).
What is Creon used for?
Creon is used in children and adults with “pancreatic extracrine insufficiency.” It is a condition in which the body does not produce enough enzymes to break down food.

3. HOW TO TAKE CREON
Always take Creon exactly as your doctor has told you. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
What dose to take
• Your dose is measured in “lipase units.” Lipase is one of the enzymes in pancreatin. Different Creon dosages contain different amounts of lipase.
• Always follow your doctor’s advice on what dose of Creon to take.
• Your doctor will tailor your dose to your needs. It depends on:
– Your illness
– Your weight
– Your diet
– How much fat is there in your feces.
• If you still have fatty stools, other stomach or intestinal problems (gastrointestinal symptoms), tell your doctor as your dose may need to be adjusted.
Cystic fibrosis
• The usual starting dose for children under 4 years of age is 1000 lipase units per kilogram per meal.
• The usual starting dose for children over 4 years of age, adolescents and adults, is 500 lipase units per kilogram per meal.
Other pancreatic problems
• The usual feeding dose is between 25,000 and 80,000 lipase units.
• The usual dose to eat between meals is half that of the main meal.
When to take Creon
Always take Creon during or after eating or eating. This will allow the enzymes to completely mix with the food, digest it and pass it through the gut.
